Who we are
Yesterday, today, tomorrow...
The Sala family has been living in this area for three generations. Grandfather Giovanni, a farmer, signed the initial lease in November 1947 when he first arrived with his family, their wagons and their cattle from Conago farm, located near Milan. Our father Domenico, a farmer too, signed the contract to buy "Cascina Selva" farm in November 1970 and we, his children, Giorgio and Adelio have run the farm and brought it forward from the Eighties to the present day. Since 2005 [we have received] help from our children and grandchildren, and have completed the farm with the opening of our children's farms and our Agritourism facilities complete with restaurant.
The "Cascina Selva" farm is located in the Parco del Ticino or Ticino Park in Ozzero a few kilometres from Vigevano and from Abbiategrasso and not very far from Morimondo, the site of an ancient Cistercian Abbey. Our area is set out on different levels with slopes and valleys; the farmhouse, is located uphill and enjoys good views of the valley below.
Dairy cow breeding has always been our main activity withour current herd being the result of many years of selective breeding work.
For the past three years our farm has been organic and our milk is partly transformed in our dairy and sold to the "Natura e Alimenta" [Nature and Food] Consortium.
To feed our animals we only use local fodder cultivated in the rural areas surrounding our farm: corn, a princely crop, is completely cut up and stored as silage, as well as the fodder crops ryegrass and peas, and meadow hay [which is stored in] hay bales. All these feedstuffs which are mixed in a special cart, are taken once a day to the manger: where the free-ranging cows, which are left out to graze in the Spring and Autumn, can eat all day and fully satiate their appetite.
